Lawyers to observe work abstention tomorrow
The lawyers across the country will observe work abstention tomorrow protesting yesterday's attack on pro-opposition lawyers on Supreme Court compound.
Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President AJ Mohammad Ali announced the programme during a press briefing at the organisation's office.
During the briefing, the (SCBA) leaders also demanded judicial investigation into yesterday's attack where around 300 to 400 ruling party activists stormed into the SC and attacked pro-opposition lawyers who had been demonstrating there in support of BNP-led 18-party opposition combine's 'March for Democracy' programme.
Alleging that a group of terrorists made the attack with the helps of the on-duty police, the SCBA president urged the chief justice to take action against the responsible police personnel.
He also demanded release of all lawyers who were detained recently.
Ali also demanded that the government should try and punish the terrorists who attacked the lawyers.
The SC lawyers were holding a peaceful meeting at the main gate of the SC and at one stage, the stick-wielding outsiders attacked them, leaving a number of lawyers injured, he added.
The terrorists also attacked the lawyers inside the SCBA when they took shelter their, the SCBA president said.
The terrorists continued the mayhem for around two hours but the police did not take any action against them, even the chief justice also did not take any steps during the incident, he alleged.
The SCBA also condemned the chief justice for his "silent behaviour".
