Lawyer, trader rescued from Bogra
Police in a drive rescued a lawyer and a trader from Daliapur village under Nandigram upazila of Bogra yesterday, a day after their abduction.
The drive was carried out after police trapped two alleged abductors at Kahalu upazila of the district on Thursday tracking their cell phones, said Md. Miraz Uddin Ahmed, Pabna superintendent of police.
The victims and the arrestees were produced before journalists at a press conference at the SP office yesterday noon.
The arrestees are Md. Abdul Karim, 30, of Pilshapara village and Obaidul Hossain, 28, of Karamjapara village. Both the villages are under Kahalu upazila of Bogra.
Talking to this correspondent, Advocate Md. Samsuzzoha alias Jamil, the victim who is a senior lawyer of Pabna court, said he had received a phone call from an unknown number a few months ago.
“Some introduced himself as Russell on the other end and eventually we started to have a good friendship,” said the 54-year-old man, who hails from Char-Rooppur village under Ishwardi upazila.
One day, the man invited Samsuzzoha to his remote village in Bogra to attend his sister's marriage and as soon as he reached there a gang of criminals abducted him.
Later, the kidnappers demanded Tk 5 lakh as ransom from the family of the lawyer. “But, they [lawyer's family] came to us and we did not do any delay to start our work,” said the SP.
Police started to deal with the kidnappers introducing themselves as members of the lawyer's family and finally managed to catch them from Kahalu upazila tracking their cell phones, added the police official.
Based on information from the duo, police raided the Daliapur village where they also found the abducted trader named Ibrahim Sheikh, 38, of Mobupur under Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj.
The trader said similar tricks were used to abduct him and Tk 8 lakh was demanded from his family as ransom.
The other kidnappers, however, managed to flee during the drive, said the SP adding that raids were on to arrest them.
The police official said a gang of kidnappers who use cell phones to carry out their “evil plans” were active in Kahalu and Nandigram upazilas of Bogra.
“Action will be taken against them,” he said adding that a case was being filed against the abductors of the lawyer and the trader.
Meanwhile, Mirza Azizur Rahman, president of Pabna Bar Association, demanded immediate arrest of all the culprits.
