Residential workshop on international law held at Jahangirnagar University
Considering the prominence of international law in legal education and the need of developing the skills of academics and researchers, the Department of Law & Justice at Jahangirnagar University organised a residential workshop on Researching and Teaching International Law in the Third World in collaboration with University of Birmingham, UK. The event started from Thursday, 27 July and ended up on Saturday, 29 July 2017 at the campus of Jahangirnagar University. Birmingham Law School has contributed in this initiative as a part of its commitment to global partnership in knowledge development and dissemination.
The workshop focused on advanced ways to study, research, and teach international law in a country like Bangladesh. As it is imperative to emphasise on grooming the faculty members and facilitate them with opportunities that hone their capabilities, the workshop created a platform where participants engaged in meaningful discussions, develop ideas, and share experience related to the academic development in international law. It introduced emerging local scholars to cutting edge research in international law from the third world perspective.
The core teaching team of the workshop was composed of Professor Antony Anghie (National University of Singapore) and Dr. Mohammad Shahabuddin (Birmingham Law School). This intensive residential workshop brought 26 international law academics, of whom 11 are teaching in public universities, 14 of them in private universities. A professional researcher from a prominent institution in Bangladesh also took active part in the workshop. Together they presented their own research papers, reviewed current scholarly developments and reconsidered canonical texts.
The workshop also hosted two public lectures by the core resource persons and a panel discussion by eminent international law academics in Bangladesh on ‘Teaching and Researching in International Law in Bangladesh: Challenges and the Way Forward’. The panelists were Dr. M. Mizanur Rahman, Professor of Law, University of Dhaka; Dr. Md. Rahmat Ullah, Professor of Law, University of Dhaka; and Dr. Borhan Uddin Khan, Professor of Law, University of Dhaka. The panel discussion was chaired by Mr. K M Shazzad Mohashin, Chairman at the Department of Law & Justice, Jahangirnagar University.
