Land acquiring plan in Keraniganj protested
Locals blocked Dhaka-Mawa highway in Keraniganj for three hours this afternoon protesting what they said the move to acquire their land for retired army officers.
At least 6,000 people of from Tegharia and Konda unions in Keraniganj, on the outskirts of the town, took to the streets around 7:00am bringing allegation that the government was trying to acquire their land in the unions to develop housing project for retired army officers.
A letter from the deputy commissioner of Dhaka was also sent to the office of the local assistant commissioner (land) in this regard, the locals said.
They blocked two kilometres on the highway stretching from Rajendrapur Bridge to Teguria Primary School by torching tyres, halting road communication of the capital with Munshiganj, Faridpur, Khulna and Barisal districts.
Traffic movement on the highway became normal around 10:00am when the agitators left the scene after the authorities assured them of stop the move, said local people.
The residents alleged that the government was trying to acquire land in the two upazilas to develop housing project for retired army officers.
