Key accused arrested
Detective Branch of police early yesterday arrested two accused in the case filed for killing a woman and her teenage daughter at Agrabad in Chittagong on Monday.
The main accused, Raihan, 25, son of Abul Bashar, was arrested from a hotel in the capital's Fakirapul area around 12:30am.
According to Raihan's confessional statement, a team of detectives in Chittagong arrested his accomplice Shahid, 24, in Khulshi area of the port city around 4:00am.
Raihan had completed a foundation course of ACCA from TH Institute in Chittagong, while Shahid was a friend of Raihan, also a driver of Crown Residence Rest House in the port city, said Saiful Islam, assistant deputy commissioner (West) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
The duo stabbed Rezia Khatun, 47, wife of C&F agent Rezaul Karim, and their SSC examinee daughter Sayma Nazneen Nishat, 16, and cut their tendons at their rented house in Agrabad CDA residential area, police said.
The killing took place between 9:30am, when Nishat's father and brother Saif Reza left the house, and 10:30am, when they were found dead by a friend of Nishat.
A murder case was filed on Monday evening with Double Mooring Police Station, accusing Raihan and some unidentified people.
Raihan was being taken to Chittagong from Dhaka at 9:00pm yesterday. Earlier, police detained a caretaker and a security guard of the building for quizzing.
The two arrestees had planned to kidnap Nishat, but ended up with killing her and her mother, the DB official said quoting Raihan as saying during primary interrogation.
Introducing himself as a BBA student, Raihan made a relationship with Nishat a year ago. As Nishat came to know that Raihan in fact did not pass HSC and was doing a course of ACCA, she started to avoid him four months ago.
Refused, Raihan planned to kidnap her, and asked Shahid to help him. Shahid was promised the goods stolen from the house, said Saiful.
They bought a knife and a fishing spear from Colonel Hat Bazar, and planned to kill Nishat if their bid to kidnap her had failed, said Babul Akter, additional deputy commissioner of detective branch of Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
The victims' family members said Raihan had proposed Nishat a few days back and visited their house to convince the family, but Nishat's brother Saif rebuked him.
Chittagong police said Raihan had left home on Thursday pretending to go on a trip.
Since Friday, they had been keeping an eye on movements of the family members, said Babul, adding that the duo had decided to go for the mission after being confirmed that Nishat's father and brother were not in the house.
On Monday morning, they hired a CNG-run three-wheeler, went to the area, and kept an eye on the flat on the 3rd floor of the six-story building.
Introducing himself as a staff of Nishat's school, Shahid rang the doorbell. As Nishat opened the door, Raihan caught her hands and pressed her mouth. Sensing a scuffle, Nishat's mother came out of her bedroom and tried to save Nishat.
Then Raihan stabbed Nishat's mother and Shahid stabbed Nishat, Babul said, adding that Rezia had tried her best to save Nishat despite being stabbed.
Therefore, the killers cut the tendons of both of them, Babul said.
Shahid changed his trousers and wore a lungi from Nishat's house as his trousers were stained with blood. Then the duo came out of the house. Raihan started for Dhaka immediately, while Shahid went to his house at Khulshi.
