Judge dealing Khaleda's graft cases transferred
The judge dealing the two graft cases against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and eight others has been transferred midway in the trial of the corruption cases.
Judge Bashudev Roy, special judge-3 of Dhaka, has been transferred to the position of a special judge in Patuakhali. He will be replaced by Abu Ahmed Jomadar, a district judge and joint secretary to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
Mizanur Rahman, deputy secretary of the law ministry, confirmed The Daily Star of the transfer and said a gazette notification will be issued today in this regard.
The move comes in backdrop of BNP chief Khaleda repeatedly budging the High Court expressing ‘no confidence’ on judge Bashudev, who framed her in the two cases.
In March this year, Judge Bashudev framed charges against BNP chief Khaleda and eight others in Zia Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage Trust corruption cases.
She had prayed that the cases be transferred to another judge. The petitions, scheduled to be heard in January next year, need no longer to be heard at the High Court.
But, Deputy Secretary Mizanur Rahman said the transfer process of Judge Bashudev was made in line with the routine work of the government of Bangladesh.
Yesterday, Judge Bashudev Roy recorded deposition in the two graft cases, filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), and fixed December 24 for further recording.
Now, Judge Jomadar will be chairing the hearing on December 24.
The ACC filed Zia Orphanage graft case in 2009 for embezzlement of over Tk 2.1 crore. The other case was filed in 2011 for abuse of power in creating the charitable trust.
