A Jamaat-e-Islami leader was run over by a bus in Pallabi area of the capital this morning while he was trying to escape arrest during a demonstration against the death penalty of party chief Motiur Rahman Nizami.
A Chittagong court on Thursday awarded death penalty to 14 people including Nizami in a 10-truck arms haul case.
Belal Hossain, 45, Jamaat ameer of Darussalam thana unit, had a skull fracture, reports our correspondent from Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where his body was taken for autopsy.
The law enforcers picked up a man suspecting him a Jamaat activist from the spot.
The incident occurred when around 60 activists of Jamaat and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, brought out a procession at Kalshi in Pallabi around 8:30am protesting Nizami conviction, said Syed Ziauzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Pallabi Police Station.
Being resisted by patrol police, they became furious and tried to vandalise vehicles on road, the OC said.
The activists also hurled brick chips targeting the law enforcers, forcing them to retaliate with rubber bullets, he said.
While trying to flee arrest, Belal, carrying banner of the party, came under the wheels of a bus, the OC added.
The Jamaat man, son of Giasuddin and a resident of Kalyanpur in the capital, succumbed to his injuries on way to DMCH.
Reason behind his death can only be determined after his autopsy, hospital sources said.
