Int'l victory of Saber, Shirin outcome of AL-led democracy
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said the electoral victory in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) achieved by two Bangladeshis is the victory of the world's democracy.
"We have faced so many hurdles and obstacles repeatedly," Hasina said, adding that the victories achieved in a span of only 10 days is an outcome of the democracy that the government has secured in the country.
The premier was addressing a reception accorded to Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and lawmaker Saber Hossain Chowdhury for being elected as the CPA chairperson and IPU president respectively. The Jatiya Sangsad organised the event at the South Plaza of the Parliament with its Deputy Speaker in the chair.
Hasina congratulated Saber and Shirin and thanked the public as well as the countries which voted for Bangladesh in the polls.
A bold and correct decision is must to achieve something and for taking that decision at the right time a politician must have self confidence, said the AL chief.
She also mentioned that Bangladesh lost its memberships of the two organisations after the killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975, after the proclamation of martial law in 1982, and during the caretaker government regime in 2008.
"But we regained the memberships after establishing democracy in the country," she added.
Shirin said the achievement elevated the country's parliamentary democracy in the international arena.
Saber said the victory reflected world leaders' confidence in the leadership of Hasina.
Lawmakers, senior civil and military officials as well as foreign diplomats were present at the reception.
