Int'l Mother Language Day in Kathmandu
The Embassy of Bangladesh in Kathmandu observed the Shaheed Dibas and International Mother Language Day on February 21, 2014 with solemnity and pageantry. The Mission organised a day-long programme to commemorate the day which began with the hoisting of the national flag at half-mast at the Chancery by the Ambassador in the morning, says a press release.
In the evening, the Mission organised a cultural programme, attended by the Ambassadors and other diplomats in Kathmandu, senior Nepalese dignitaries, civil society members, representatives of the Nepalese print and electronic media, officials of the Mission and SAARC secretariat, and expatriate Bangladeshis. The programme began with the recitation of verses from four Holy books. The Officer-in-charge, UNESCO, who attended the programme as chief-guest, made a short statement highlighting the significance of the day and outlining UNESCO's plans for commemorating the day. The Nepal Bhasha Parishad, a cultural group which promotes the local Newari language, participated in the cultural programme by reciting Newari poetry, singing Newari songs (including a Newari translation of a Nazrul geeti). A Nepalese artiste also sang a Nepali song followed by recitation of Bangla poetry. The highlight of the evening's cultural programme was a performance by. Sharmin Sathi Islam, Bizon Chandra Mistry and Ibne Khaldun Razon from Bangladesh who rendered several Bangla patriotic songs which were greatly appreciated by the audience. The programme concluded with a short speech on 21st February by the Ambassador.
