India's intelligence agencies sound terror alert to Kolkata police
Indian intelligence agencies have alerted Kolkata police about the possibility of a terror attack in the city, especially in the port area, PTI reported today quoting a senior official of Kolkata police.
"We have received inputs from central intelligence agencies that there might be a terror attack in Kolkata, especially in port area. We have beefed up the security in the port area and have put the entire city under security blanket," said a senior Kolkata police officer on condition of anonymity, reports our New Delhi correspondent Pallab Bhattacharya.
According to the input, terrorists might carry out an attack in port area and the terrorists might use small boats to carry out the attack, he added.
Meanwhile, sleuths of India's National Investigation Agency have searched the house of a key absconding accused in connection with the Burdwan blast case, an investigating agency official said today.
A seven-member NIA team from Assam state capital city Guwahati seized some materials after a six-hour search of the house of Shahnor Alom in Barpeta district of Assam yesterday, he said.
The key accused of the October-2 blast that left two dead gave a slip to West Bengal police as well as NIA and is believed to have fled to Bangladesh.
"We seized whatever was found in two cartons. The investigation is on. We'll analyze it. We cannot say anything at present," the official said.
The seized articles included some documents, Arabian coins, bank passbooks and money collection receipt books of Talimul Madrassa of West Bengal, he said.
Alom is absconding and NIA recently declared Rs 5 lakh reward for anyone giving information leading to his arrest.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters that jihadi activities in his state are mainly in Barpeta district. "Jihadi activities are mainly from Barpeta district. Some people from there and Nalbari district have gone for training outside," Gogoi said.
"Jihadi activities have been there since 1995. In Assam, we have made over 600 arrests, including Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (Huji), Muslim United Liberation Front of Assam (MULTA) elements," he said.
