Indefinite transport strike in Rajshahi division
Transport owners and workers enforced an indefinite strike in Rajshahi division since this morning demanding a ban on plying of unauthorised vehicles like nosimon, korimon and bhatbhoti on roads and highways.
The strike caused untold sufferings to traders and common people as road communications between eight districts under the division and the rest of the country remains suspended since 6:00am, reports our Rajshahi correspondent.
The six-point demand also includes immediate steps to stop toll collection by police, harassment by Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) authorities in the name of issuing fitness certificates and suspension of double-decker bus services at upazila level roads.
On May 20, Rajshahi Bus-Truck Owner and Workers Oikya Parishad observed a 29-hour token strike demanding fulfillment of their demands.
The transport owners and workers held a street rally on the following day and announced the indefinite strike issuing an ultimatum to the government to meet their demands by yesterday (Saturday).
“As our demands were not met by the given time, the owners and workers decided to enforce the strike from 6:00am today,” Manjur Rahman Piter, convener of the organisation, told The Daily Star.
