Indefinite blockade from Wednesday
The BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance has called for an indefinite nationwide rail, road and waterways blockade from Wednesday morning.
It will also stage protest rallies across the country tomorrow.
The alliance came up with the agitation programme after the government authorities thwarted its 'March for Democracy' with strict measures.
Khaleda Zia, chief of the alliance, on December 24 called for the Dhaka march for December 29 and extended it till today after law enforcers did not allow her to come out of Gulshan residence to join the programme.
The alliance enforced similar blockade for a total of 22 days in phases from November 26 a day after the Election Commission declared the schedule for the 10th parliamentary polls which the opposition parties are boycotting demanding the election under a non-party arrangement.
Khandker Mahbub Hossain, an adviser to Khaleda and vice-chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council, announced the fresh agitation programme from his Bashundhara residence this evening.
Claiming the march to be successful, the BNP leader said the government was compelled to de-link the capital from rest of the country to resist the rush of people from joining the 'March for Democracy'.
Saying the handover of power should be in a democratic way, Mahbub, a lawyer by profession, warned of bad consequences if the blockade is resisted.
