Incumbent, ex-RCC mayors land in jail
At least 34 BNP leaders and activists, including Rajshahi city Mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul and central leader Mizanur Rahman Minu, were sent to jail in two cases.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Rajshahi passed the order on their surrender seeking bail in the cases filed over the killing of a policeman with explosives in December last year, reports our Rajshahi correspondent.
BNP’s Rajshahi city unit general secretary Shafiqul Haque Milon was among the leaders, said Sajjad Hossain, assistant commissioner (prosecution) of police for metropolitan courts.
Earlier on January 10, Minu, Bulbul, and Milon got bail in the cases from the High Court which had asked them to seek bail from the lower court by today.
Following the HC order, the trio along with 31 others, surrendered before the additional CMM court.
A huge number of BNP leaders and activists gathered at the court premises since morning, chanting anti-government slogans as the law enforcers took the accused BNP men to jail around 3:00pm.
Meanwhile, constable Siddhartha Chandra Sarkar, 23, and eight others sustained splinter injuries after alleged BNP-Jamaat men hurled a bomb on a patrol police van in Rajarhata area of Rajshahi city on December 26 last year.
Siddhartha succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Combined Military Hospital.
Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam filed the cases with Boalia Police Station accusing some 87 BNP and Jamaat men for the murder of Shiddhartha and obstructing the government activities by throwing bomb on police van.
