Illegal trip to Malaysia: Navy sues 85
Two separate cases were filed today against 85 Myanmar and Bangladeshi nationals in connection with the illegal voyage to Malaysia by sea where around 600 trafficking victims were rescued.
Lieutenant Commander M Mahbubur Rahman, executive officer of BNS Durjoy, a navy ship that intercepted a Myanmar cargo carrier carrying the people, lodged the cases with Patenga Police Station this morning.
A total of 82 Myanmar nationals including 19 females were sued for illegal entry into Bangladesh while 17 citizens from both the countries including 3 Bangladeshis were accused in another case filed for human trafficking.
Fourteen Myanmar nationals were accused in both the cases, said Kazi Shahabuddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Patenga Police Station.
“Navy handed us over 592 people on Tuesday night while 85 of them were accused in the two cases said the OC.
The detained 85 persons and 12 Myanmar infants were produced before the court, said the OC adding that they would seek a 7-day remand against each of the 17 accused of human trafficking.
The rescued 495 Bangladeshi fortune seekers including 14 women and 21 kids were released in the morning after interrogation, he added.
The Bangladeshi fortune seekers were collected from different places across the country by human traffickers and then taken to different spots at Teknaf to be sent to the trawler through small boats 10 to 12 days ago, said the victims.
Traffickers lured many of victims promising attractive jobs in Malaysia while kidnapped and forcefully took away some others.
BNS Durjoy intercepted the Myanmar trawler, a wooden cargo carrier, with 592 people around 120 nautical miles off St Martin’s Island on Monday morning and brought trawler to Chittagong on Tuesday evening.
