Huji planned countrywide attack in August
The banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (Huji) had planned to carry out bomb attacks in some parts the country in August this year, detectives claimed today.
“They were awaiting orders to launch the attacks,” Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said at a presser this afternoon arranged to reveal details of the arrest of a top Huji operative.
Khairul Bashar, alias Ibrahim, 30, the operational chief of the Huji, was arrested from Dhaka’s Sayedabad area around 11:00pm last night, detectives said. Plans of their attacks were obtained after quizzing him in custody.
Ibrahim said to have obtained militant training under the supervision of Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba for two years. He came back to the country recently to groom co-jihadists.
He was arrested on information obtained from grilling the seven Huji operatives caught with huge cache of explosives and bomb-related materials between October 25 and November 1.
“The Huji operatives were getting frustrated because they did not receive the delivery of arms, ammunition and explosives in due time,” Monirul Islam said.
“Ibrahim is one of the operatives who received training from Lashkar-e-Taiba. Their batch received training on attacking ‘hard and soft’ targets. There, they learned of making bombs and operating firearms,” the police official added.
The militants also had a plan to establish ‘an indoor arms factory’ under the coordination of Ibrahim, Monirul said.
Police earlier said that the militant groups within Bangladesh were uniting under a common platform in order to achieve their goal which includes attacks on major cities and eminent individuals.
