Wash your hands, keep 13 diseases away

Star Online Report

You can save a child's life if you simply teach him how to wash hands.

Hand washing with soap at key periods can reduce diarrhoeal deaths in children by 50 per cent. This is one of the most inexpensive ways to prevent many waterborne and respiratory diseases in the country.

The key periods include before handling food, after using the toilet, cleaning babies' bottoms and contact with contaminated foods or water and bodily fluids like nasal excretions.

Study shows that if not washed with soap, after such periods or contacts, hands can transport bacteria, viruses and parasites to unwitting hosts.

According to World Health Organisation, every year 1.7 billion people around the world suffer from diarrhea, a symptom of an intestinal tract infection that spreads through contaminated food or drinking water, or through poor hygiene.

The Health Bulletin 2014 published by Bangladesh's health and family welfare ministry reported about 2,641,855 diarrhea cases in 2013.

Dettol's 'Give Life a Hand' campaign is a global initiative to help combat preventable deaths from diarrhoea and save children's lives through raising awareness about the importance of hand washing with soap and driving better hygiene habits.

With Global Hand washing Day coming up on October 15, the campaign invites people to engage on social media – Facebook and YouTube – by watching, liking and sharing the 'Give Life a Hand' videos and other digital contents.

Most importantly, people are encouraged to take a 'handfie' – a picture of their soap-cleaned hands and upload it on social media with #HealthyHand hash tag.

For every #HealthyHand picture, Dettol pledges to teach a child healthy hand washing habits.

So, get your camera rolling and post a handfie to join the global initiative.
