HC summons Jamaat leader
The High Court today asked acting secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami Rafiqul Islam Khan to appear before it on July 7 to explain his ‘derogatory and contemptuous’ statement about the court.
The HC said Khan would face consequence if he does not comply with the order.
The HC bench of Justice Md Asfaqul Islam and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal also fixed July 7 for delivering a verdict on a contempt of court rule issued against him for the statement.
On August 5 last year, another HC bench headed by Justice M Enayetur Rahim issued the contempt of court rule against Khan and another Jamaat leader, Md Ibrahim.
Khan on August 1 issued the statement rejecting the HC verdict, which declared the Jamaat’s registration with the Election Commission illegal.
He said in the statement that the government’s desire has been reflected through the HC verdict, which is against the rule of law, democracy and fundamental rights and the constitution.
Receiving a copy of the statement, the HC bench led by Justice Enayetur on August 5 also asked them to appear before the HC on September 16 last year to explain why contempt of court proceeding should not be brought against them for issuing such statement.
Earlier on June 9 last year, the International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced “absconding” and Jamaat acting secretary general Khan to three months’ imprisonment and fined each of them Tk 3,000 for contempt of court as he had made derogatory remark about it.
Rafiqul and Ibrahim apologised unconditionally to the court for the statement and Ibrahim appeared before the HC as per its directive, but Rafiqul did not show up, Deputy Attorney General SM Maniruzzaman told The Daily Star.
