HC summons DIG prisons
The High Court has asked the deputy inspector general (DIG) of prisons of Dhaka and senior superintendent of Dhaka Central Jail to appear before it tomorrow for not providing it with information about the period served by a life-term prisoner.
The two officials--DIG Golam Haider and Senior Superintendent Formal Ali--have to appear by 10:30am and explain why they refused to give the information about Awlad Hossain, who was given life imprisonment by a lower court in 2005 in a murder case.
Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Fazlur Rahman Khan told The Daily Star that the HC needed the information for delivering a verdict on the appeal filed by Awlad challenging his life sentence.
The DAG said the HC bench of Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Md Abu Zafor Siddique asked him on Sunday to get the information from the jail's senior superintendent.
He said he instantly called Forman by phone and requested the information, but Forman said he would not give the information without any written order of the court.
