HC order for political talks sought
A Supreme Court lawyer yesterday petitioned the High Court to direct major political parties including the Awami League and the BNP to hold a dialogue and bring an end to the ongoing crisis marked by violence and deaths of innocent civilians.
A dialogue is necessary to avert arson attacks and bombings which are killing, injuring people and destroying properties, Eunus Ali Akond said in the petition.
The court may hear it on Monday, he told The Daily Star.
Eunus prayed for an order on the home secretary for taking necessary measures to stop violence and killings in the name of political movement.
The HC was also requested to issue a rule upon the political leaders and the government agencies concerned to explain why they should not be directed to arrange talks in or outside parliament to resolve the crisis and ensure holding of the next parliamentary election in a free and fair manner.
He requested that Awami League-led 14-party combine's head Sheikh Hasina,
BNP-led 20-party alliance's chief Khaleda Zia, Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad and Ganoforum President Dr Kamal Hossain, the Speaker, chief election commissioner, cabinet secretary, and home secretary are made respondents to the rule.
On February 25 last year, the HC rejected a similar writ petition filed by Eunus in 2013 seeking its directives on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and then opposition leader Khaleda Zia on the ground that there was no political crisis at that time.
