HC moves to stop animal-fighting races
The High Court today ordered stop on animal-fighting competitions in Sunamganj and sought reason to the government why such acts would not be banned in the country.
The court prohibited bull-fighting, cock-fighting, goat-fighting and dog-culling at Chatak area of Sunamganj for the next eight weeks.
It also sought answer by three weeks as to why the court will not order a stop to bull-fighting, cock-fighting, goat-fighting and dog-culling throughout the country.
The bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Jahangir Hossain passed the orders, moved by a writ petition filed by an animal welfare foundation Obhoyaronno.
Rubaiya Ahmed, founder and chairperson of the organisation, submitted the petition to the court challenging legality of such “animal cruelty” in the name of competition.
She alleged that cruelty towards animal in any manner is prohibited by law and the constitution and such competitions are held in violation of those laws, especially in Chatak area.
An associate to Obhoyaronno, Nadia Chowdhury, prayed to the court to direct the government to take steps for stopping such cruelty towards animals in the name of competition.
The law secretary, home secretary, Sunamganj’s deputy commissioner and police superintendent, two organisers of one such race Anhor Ali and Asab Ali, were made respondents.
They will have to answer to the court within three weeks.
