HC bans operation on highways of five dists
The High Court yesterday directed the government to stop plying of illegal improvised motorised three-wheelers on the highways of five southern districts in 72 hours.
The vehicles are Nosimon, Kariman, Bhotbhoti, Mahindra and easy bikes.
In response to a writ petition, the HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice Md Khasruzzaman asked the deputy commissioners and superintendents of police of Barisal, Khulna, Madaripur, Faridpur and Rajbari to comply with the order and submit a report before it in two weeks.
The HC also issued a rule upon the government to explain in four weeks why it should not be directed to enforce the motor vehicle law to stop the vehicles.
Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh on Sunday filed the petition saying that these vehicles were plying the highways without permission. Many people lost lives due to accidents caused by movement of such vehicles, added the petitioner.
On February 10 this year, the HC ordered the government to ban Nosimon, Karimon and Bhotbhoti from highways in 10 districts -- Jessore, Khulna, Jhenidah, Magura, Meherpur, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Narail, Kushtia and Chuadanga.
