Handcuffed body raises questions
Inscribed with the word “police”, the handcuffs on the wrist of a driver murdered in the capital's Banashree have raised many questions.
Posing as law enforcers, criminals shot dead Faruk Kha, who was about to deliver an imported car at Banashree, and hijacked the vehicle around 2:30am on Monday.
Police were yet to arrest anyone though the hijacked car was spotted on Dhaka-Mawa highway about 17 hours after the murder. The Toyota car was later found abandoned on the highway.
The handcuffs found attached to Faruk's wrist suggest that law enforcers might have been involved in the incident, said victim's younger brother Badsha Kha.
“I think it is not easy for ordinary criminals to get hold of handcuffs,” he said.
Badsha wondered how the person driving the hijacked car managed to escape while police were chasing the vehicle on the highway.
On how the criminals could get the handcuffs, several police officials said the killers might have bought those from Polwel market in the city's Nayapaltan area.
Asked whether they suspect involvement of any law enforcer in the incident, Deputy Police Commissioner Masudur Rahman said police were looking into the matter.
Faruk and his friend Khalilur Rahman Khaza left Mongla for the capital around 7:00pm on Sunday for delivering two imported cars to their employer, Manten Motors. Faruk worked for the company for around five years.
Police sub-inspector (SI) Khandker Jahangir Hossain, also investigation officer in the murder case, said there was no progress in the probe.
The hijacked car was found abandoned on Dhaka-Mawa highway in Keraniganj around 7:00pm on Monday. As its driver sped up ignoring a police signal to stop on the highway, Dakkhin Keraniganj police chased the car.
Being chased for one and a half kilometres, the driver abandoned the car, said the SI of Rampura Police Station.
Security guard Abdul Majeed, who was near the scene when the incident took place, said, “When I heard two gunshots, I ran towards the spot blowing my whistle. As I reached near the scene, a white car almost ran me over.
“I found the man dead. I did not hear any scream or appeal for help,” said the security guard of Banashree Kalyan Samity.
“A police patrol car drove past the spot only five minutes before the shooting. The same team arrived at the scene within five minutes after the incident,” he added.
