Hamid seeks more Indian support in power sector
President Abdul Hamid, now in New Delhi on a six-day visit to India, today sought more cooperation from the neighbouring country in the power sector to meet the growing electricity demand at home.
The President sought the support when Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj made a call on him at his place of residence at Rashtrapati Bhaban.
After the meeting, President's press secretary Ihsanul Karim said that Abdul Hamid appreciated Indian cooperation in the power sector adding that Bangladesh expects more in this regard as the demand for electricity in the country is rising fast.
Bangladesh is currently importing 500 MW of electricity from India.
Sushma Swaraj told President Hamid that India candidly wants Bangladesh’s rapid progress as it is not only India’s neighbour but also a dependable friend.
Hamid underscored the need for people-to-people contact of the both countries for bolstering the existing ties.
In this connection, both the Bangladesh President and the Indian Foreign Minister stressed the importance of exchanging of visits of MPs of the two neighbouring nations.
Sushma expressed satisfaction over the high-level meetings between the two countries in the last six months.
President thanked Sushma for visiting Bangladesh first after being the Foreign Minister of India.
Abdul Hamid also recalled the cooperation of the Indian government and its people during Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam, Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Syed Muazzem Ali and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pankaj Saran and senior Secretary of the President's Office Shaikh Altaf Ali were, among others, present.
