Gunshots, blasts at CU
Activists of the Chhatra League and the Islami Chhatra Shibir traded bullets on Chittagong University (CU) campus yesterday afternoon. No casualty was reported in this incident.
Police said some Shibir men of the CU unit engaged in an altercation with the BCL activists near Suhrawardy Hall field around 5:45pm over a trifle. At one stage, both the groups started hurling brick chips at each other.
When the news spread on the campus, the Shibir activists took position inside the hall and the BCL activists outside the dormitory.
During the clash, at least 20 crude bombs were exploded and over 50 bullets were fired, according to police.
Abul Kashem, inspector (investigation) of Hathazari Police Station, who was on the spot, said the situation came under control around 8:00pm.
Diyaz Irfan Chowdhury, former joint secretary of the CU unit BCL, alleged that the Shibir men suddenly attacked their activists when they went to Suhrawardy Hall field.
However, Saidul Islam, organising secretary of Shibir's CU unit, said the BCL men teased a Shibir activist and beat him up as he protested it.
