GRP evicts illegal market near Karwan Bazar rail track
Following the yesterday’s tragic rail accident that took away four lives at Kawran Bazar in Dhaka, railway police evicted illegal makeshift market on and along the rail track this morning.
Workforce of around a 100 people took part in the drive to evict illegal structures from Film Development Corporation (FDC) gate, said operation officer Rafiqul Islam of Bangladesh Government Railway Police (GRP).
Nurun Nabi Kabir, divisional estate officer of Bangladesh Railway told The Daily Star they began the drive at 9:00am and ended at 1:00pm.
On Thursday, four people were killed in an illegal fish market set up on railway lines in Karwan Bazar as they jumped on to the path of an express train to avoid being run over by another train.
Five others were seriously injured in the accident.
“All illegal structures from FDC area to Tejgaon rail station will be removed,” he said, adding that the authorities decided to conduct drive following the yesterday’s incident.
Meanwhile, the evicted businessmen alleged that they were being displaced without any notification.
“I have lost goods worth around Tk 20 lakh. They have been damaged,” said Billal Hossain, owner of a car workshop at FDC area. “I could have moved them if notified earlier.”
Railway official Nurun Nabi however brushed aside the allegation saying, “We told them to move yesterday. They had been asked this morning, an hour before our drive began.”
“This time we will never let anybody occupy the places on and along the rail tracks,” he said, while asked about previous drives ahead of Eid.
