Gowher Rizvi for 'self-regulation' in journalism
Prime Minister's International Affairs Adviser Gowher Rizvi urged journalists to practice self-regulation in their profession.
If the media does not maintain self-regulation, outsiders will try to regulate it which will create a problem for this sector, Rizvi said at a discussion on "Recent perspective of journalism in Bangladesh" and award giving ceremony for investigative journalism-2014 organised by the Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) at the capital's Drik Gallery.
Journalists must present true and evidence-based information and follow a code of ethics as well as accountability, the chief guest added.
He also called upon journalists to remain cautious about not being used only to fulfill the purpose of their institutions' owners.
Arup Roy of the daily Prothom Alo, and HM Alauddin of the Dainik Purbanchal were awarded along with Sazzad Parvez of Jamuna Television who got the prize for his report telecast on SA TV.
In a separate prize giving ceremony of the anti-corruption cartoon competition-2014, organised by the TIB at the same venue in the evening, SM Asif Bin Gaffar, Mahmudul Hassan Emon, MD Faridur Rahman Razib, Arafat Karim and Mehedi Haque were awarded. Besides, 35 others also received certificates and prize money.
TIB's Chairperson Sultana Kamal, and its Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman, attended both the events while Denmark Ambassador to Bangladesh Hanne Fugl Eskjaer and Swedish Ambassador to Dhaka Johan Frisell attended the latter.
Fifty nine cartoons, submitted in the competition, are on display at the gallery, from 3:30pm to 8:00pm till December 16.
