Govt trying to 'lure away' BNP leaders
BNP spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday accused the government of hatching a conspiracy to split his party to stop the ongoing anti-government movement.
The government is trying to "lure away" leaders from the BNP, he said, adding that all these ill-motives would end up in failure like the past, and the people would resist these.
Addressing a discussion at the capital's Jatiya Press Club, the BNP acting secretary general warned, "If anyone [BNP leaders and activists] betrays the country as well as the movement, the people will try them."
The programme was organised by Barrister Salam Talukder Smriti Sangsad on the death anniversary of the former BNP secretary general.
Fakhrul also dismissed Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam's recent comments that the two leaders talked regularly over the country's political issues. "We talked only thrice, and all these conversations took place before the January 5 polls."
Pointing to the recent activities of the government, the BNP leader said formulating new policies and laws showed the government was heading towards a one-party rule. If the country is to be saved, there is no alternative to staging a movement to oust the government, he said.
