Govt to uphold death rule in Nizami’s appeal
The government will take necessary legal steps to uphold the death penalty for war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami in the Appellate Division and execute the verdict as soon as possible, the law minister said today.
“Now we (government) will try to get over with the appeal hearing quickly upholding the death verdict,” Anisul Huq told reporters at his Gulshan residence in the capital while giving his reaction to the media.
"I am satisfied over the verdict personally and the government is also pleased with it. The verdict is acceptable," the minister said.
Nizami has not only killed people during the country's 1971 Liberation War but also planned killing of many, including the intellectuals at the end of war in December in 1971, he added.
He termed the judgement "appropriate".
“The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has finished the trial procedure independently.”
Replying to another query, he said the proposal for amending International Crimes (tribunals) Act, 1973 determining the punishment of war criminal organisations will be likely to be placed before the cabinet meeting for its approval on November 3.
