Govt is bowing to polls demand: Fakhrul
The government has begun to bow to the demand for immediate national election under a nonparty caretaker government, BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today.
The BNP spokesperson cited Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Thursday briefing and said: “The PM said the next polls can be held anytime through a democratic process – this proves that she has begun to surrender to the people’s demand.”
Fakhrul was addressing a presser after a joint meeting held at the party's Nayapaltan central office in the capital on Friday, a day after the PM’s briefing.
Yesterday (Thursday), the premier addressed the media after her UAE visit. There she told reporters that the government had the right to hold the next general election anytime through democratic procedure.
BNP RALLY NOVEMBER 8
The BNP plans to hold a rally on November 8 to mark the “National Revolution and Solidarity Day”, Fakhrul said in the presser.
“We have taken an initiative to stage the rally at Suhrawardi Udyan to mark the historic November 7. We expect the government’s cooperation in this regard,” he said.
BNP will observe the November 7, amid elaborate programmes for ten days, as the "National Revolution and Solidarity Day" marking the civil-military “uprising” that led to release of the then army chief Ziaur Rahman in 1975.
Meanwhile, the party is also gearing to wage a “harsher anti-government movement” to press for the demand for the next general election, Fakhrul added.
