Govt decision on Jamaat after SC verdict: Law Minister
The government will take decision on banning Jamaat’s politics after the Supreme Court delivers verdict in the case related to its registration with the Election Commission, Law Minister Anisul Huq today.
“Since the case is already pending at the Supreme Court division, the government will not take any decision before its disposal,” the law minister said.
He was replying to questions from journalists at a meet the press programme organised by Law Reporters Forum at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital.
He said the high commissioners and ambassadors of USA and different other countries where Bangabandhu’s killers and death row convicts in war crimes cases are hiding have been putting pressure on the government to repeal the provision of death penalty
“But I told them that the Bangladesh government will not repeal the death penalty provision in the cases where nefarious offences have been committed,” he said.
The minister said, “Some of the convicted killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman have been hiding in Pakistan and Libya, which sponsor the militancy.”
It is difficult to find out the trace of the killers in the two countries and that is why the Bangladesh government cannot bring them back to the country, he added.
He also criticised the lawyers of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for shouting and using abusive words towards a Dhaka court judge and forcing him to leave the courtroom last week.
A Dhaka court on March 19 framed charges against nine persons including BNP chief Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman in Zia Orphanage and Zia Charitable trust graft case.
The indictment came after an eventful day at Special Judges Court-3 marked by the Judge Bashudev Roy's leaving the courtroom twice following the defence lawyers' derogatory remarks.
