Ghulam Azam’s lawyers won’t seek parole of Nizami, Sayedee
The counsels of convicted war criminal Ghulam Azam would not seek parole of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Motiur Rahman Nizami or Delawar Hossain Sayedee to conduct his namaz-e-janaza.
“We are not going to seek their parole as his [Ghulam Azam] family finds it unrealistic,” Tajul Islam, counsel for the former Jamaat chief, told The Daily Star this evening.
Tajul is also lawyer of both Nizami and Sayedee who are now landing in jail. Sayedee is serving jail sentence until death for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War while Nizami was sentenced to death for his involvement in smuggling 10-turck arms in 2004. Nizami also faces war crimes charges.
Ghulam Azam, the symbol of war crimes in Bangladesh, died last night at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Dhaka.
According to the family, the 92-year-old had expressed a wish that his janaza be conducted by his party colleague Nizami or Sayedee and it was heard that defence would seek their parole.
Meanwhile, different pro-liberation organisations and individuals protested the decision as Sayedee himself is a convicted war criminal while Nizami is facing same charges.
