German MPs due tomorrow to assess workplace safety
A seven-member delegation of the German Parliamentary Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development will arrive in Dhaka tomorrow for a five-day visit to review the workers’ safety and rights situation in RMG sector in Bangladesh.
The visit is taking place marking the one year of the collapse of Rana Plaza building in Savar, said a press release of the German embassy in Dhaka today.
It said the main purpose of the visit is to assess the situation in the RMG sector and get information about the initiatives taken so far in this sector to improve the health and safety standards for the Bangladeshi workers.
During the visit, the delegation members will meet with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker of Jatiya Sangshad Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed and other political leaders.
Moreover, the delegation will travel to Savar to visit the survivors at the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) which receives funding from German Development Cooperation.
In addition, they will visit a couple of factories in Savar to get an impression of the working conditions of Bangladeshi workers.
Besides, the German Members of Parliament will visit two projects that focus on the inclusion of street children and victims of acid attacks to demonstrate their solidarity with those vulnerable groups in need of support.
Ahead of their departure, the delegation will brief the journalists on the outcome of the visit at a press conference in Dhaka on April 29.
Headed by Dagmar Woehrl, who has been the Chair of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development since 2009, the other members of the delegation are Juergen Klimke, Frank Heinrich, Stefan Rebmann, Gabi Weber, Niema Movassat and Uwe Kekeritz.
