Fuel supply to N districts resumes after 5 days
Authorities resumed fuel supply to eight northern districts from Parbatipur Railhead Oil Depot in Dinajpur under tight security on Friday, fives after supply cut to refuelling stations due to countrywide blockade enforced by BNP-led 20-party alliance.
The fuel shortage had already affected the ongoing boro farming and movement of light vehicles.
Under tight protection of law enforcers, at least 86 oil tank lorries taking diesel and petrol from Parbatipur Railhead Oil Depot left for different areas of Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, Panchagarh, Rangpur and Nilphamari districts on Friday afternoon, said Shajahan Hawladar, in charge of the oil depot.
More lorries started for Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat and Kurigram, in addition to the aforesaid five districts, yesterday, said officials of Padma, Meghna and Jamuna petroleum companies.
"Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation has taken the initiative as most fuel stations in eight northern districts ran short of fuel due to the blockade, and it badly affected the farmers who are preparing boro seedbeds. The shortfall of fuel also affected the ongoing aman threshing," said Rahenul Islam, UNO of Parbatipur.
The present stock of the depot is 65 lakh litres of kerosene and 6.40 lakh litres of diesel, sources said.
The authorities took a similar initiative as northern districts faced fuel crisis during the countrywide blockade by BNP-led alliance for quite a few days before and after the national elections on January 5 last year.
