Fruit traders call off strike
The Metropolitan Fruit Traders Association today called off their indefinite strike following an assurance from the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI).
The traders kept their fruit shops shut from June 19 protesting the anti-formalin drive of Dhaka Metropolitan Police that led to destruction of tonnes of fruits.
“We withdrew the strike after the FBCCI assured us of looking into the matter. Also, we are incurring huge losses and failing to pay wages to our employees,” said Julhasuddin, secretary of the association.
He came up with the decision after FBCCI Vice President Helal Uddin held a meeting with the fruit traders, who were forming a human chain at Badamtoli, a wholesale fruit market in Old Dhaka.
Traders estimate fruits worth around Tk 10 crore have so far been destroyed by The Dhaka Metropolitan Police since the drive began on June 11.
