A marine engr, he 'left for Iraq to join IS'
Marine Engineer Najibullah Ansari, who was working on a foreign flag carrier, had been missing for around one and a half years. He stopped communicating with his family since January last year after sending a message to his younger brother, via Facebook, that he was “going to Iraq to join ISIS”.
But the family did not disclose it to police until July 10. Seeing the name and picture of Najibullah as missing person on television on July 8, his family lodged a general diary with EPZ Police Station in Chittagong city on July 10.
Najibullah's family lives in the port city's Navy Colony. His father Rafiqullah Ansari, from Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj, is a retired official of Bangladesh Navy, said Sub-inspector Jahedullah Zaman of EPZ Police Station.
Najibullah passed SSC and HSC examinations from Rajshahi Cadet College in 2005 and 2007 with GPA-5, said the police official, quoting the GD.
Najibullah then went to Malaysia in 2008 for higher studies and got admitted to the Malaysian Marine Academy, the SI added.
After completing his study, he joined a foreign ship as a marine engineer in 2012, said the police officer, adding that Najibullah used to maintain contact with his family over the phone and the internet until January last year.
The SI said in the GD, Najibullah's father said an official of a government intelligence agency contacted him to know about Najibullah after his January's Facebook message.
“The intelligence agency official collected Najibullah's passport number from him,” said the police official, quoting Najibullah's father.
“After filing of the general diary, we are now investigating the matter,” said SI Zaman, who is probing the GD.
The Daily Star, however, could not independently verify the claims of the SI.
This correspondent contacted Najibullah's father Rafiqullah over the phone yesterday and wanted to know about filing of the GD. But Rafiqullah hung up the phone.
