Illegally occupied
Government officials and employees have illegally occupied 128 houses across the country, Housing and Public Works Minister Mosharraf Hossain told parliament yesterday.
In scripted answers to lawmakers' queries, he also said these public servants have been occupying the houses by filing cases with different courts.
Advertisements have been published in newspapers to appoint two lawyers for ensuring quick disposal of the cases, the minister added.
Replying to another question, he said the number of abandoned houses in the country is as many as 10,414.
Of the total number, 6,406 are in Dhaka, 62 in Narayanganj, 26 in Rajbari, 228 in Rajshahi, 16 in Chapainawabganj, 30 in Naogaon, 123 in Pabna, 13 in Sirajganj, 280 in Bogra, 1,421 in Khulna, 92 in Jessore, 507 in Kushtia, 27 in Chuadanga, 353 in Chittagong, 42 in Rangpur, 378 in Dinajpur, 223 in Nilphamari, 17 in Kurigram, 108 in Lalmonirhat, 21 in Gaibandha and the rest of the houses are in various parts of the country.
PURBACHAL TOWNSHIP
In reply to a query, Mosharraf Hossain said the implementation of the Purbachal New Town project, located in the northeast side of the capital and by far the largest planned township in the country, will house around one crore inhabitants.
The town will have 25,016 plots of residential category and 1,992 of other categories, he said adding that nearly 85 percent of the land development work of the project has been completed.
In response to separate queries, Mosharraf said the government so far handed over 1,815 plots to allottees in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd phases of the project, and currently the project does not have any plot left for allocation.
