Snatching Prisoners: Key accused among those held in India
JMB leader Anwar Hossain Faruk alias Enam, who was arrested along with five others in India, is the accused of film-styled snatching of militants from a prison van in Trishal in 2014.
"We consider Faruq as the most wanted in the snatching of JMB militants case in Mymensingh. Police have pressed charges against him over the incident and declared a bounty for him," Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said.
He was talking to reporters at his ministry after having a meeting with Puja Udjapan Parishad over security of the upcoming Durga Puja yesterday.
Six suspected operatives of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh have been arrested in India.
Three of them are Bangladeshi nationals. They are Faruk, Mohammad Rubel alias Rafique and Zabirul Islam alias Zahid, Joint Commissioner (detective) of Kolkata police Vishal Garg told reporters at the Kolkata police headquarters on Monday.
"We have learned that they have been arrested. If so, it is big news for us," Kamal said, adding, officially they were not yet informed about it.
Responding to a query, the home minister said, "We have an extradition treaty with India. So, we can bring not only Faruk but also any other wanted criminals."
According to police, Faruk used to lead a JMB faction and allegedly masterminded the Trishal prison van ambush.
The JMB men snatched away three top JMB leaders, killing a policeman in the ambush on February 23, 2014. Later on, one of them was killed in “crossfire”.
Faruk was arrested in the city's Mirpur-1 area on July 10, 2007 after a brief gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab). He secured bail in 2012 and took nearly two years to prepare for the Trishal attack, investigators said.
He is also the prime accused in the 2007 murder case of madrasa teacher Rafiqul Islam of Mymensingh.
On the Durga Puja, the home boss said adequate security measures have been taken to ensure that people of the Hindu community in the country could celebrate their largest festival without any hassle.
He said four Ansar members would be deployed alongside policemen in every puja mandap across the country in a bid to avoid any untoward incident.
Besides, members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) would patrol alongside police forces in the districts adjacent to the border, he added.
