AL MP's son lands in jail
Son of a ruling Awami League lawmaker from Satkhira was sent to jail yesterday following his arrest in two extortion cases.
Detectives arrested Rashed Sarwar alias Rumon, 32, the youngest son of Refat Amin, lawmaker of a reserved seat for women, in Chourangimore of Satkhira town, said Ali Ahmed Hashmi, officer-in-charge (detectives) of Satkhira police.
He was later handed over to Satkhira Sadar Police Station and subsequently sent to jail, Hashmi said.
Julfikar Ali alias Uzzwal, former vice president of Satkhira district Jubo League, filed a case on September 12, accusing Rashed of beating and extorting him, said Firoj Hossain Mollah, officer- in-charge of Satkhira Police Station.
Another extortion case was filed by Sirajul Islam against Rashed on August 24, the OC said, adding that Rashed was arrested in these cases.
Contacted, Refat Amin first said she was not aware of her son's arrest but later during the same conversation with The Daily Star claimed that the arrest was part of a conspiracy.
Earlier in May, police arrested Rashed with three women at Barsha Resort near the Sundarbans in Shyamnagar upazila of the district and recovered his mother's licensed pistol and 43 bullets from his possession.
Rashed at the time had his mother's car with him with the sticker of parliament.
Though police released the women, they filed a case against Rashed allegedly for violating the Motor Vehicle Act and sent him to jail. Rashed was released on bail on May 22.
Debdash Paul, a resident of Sultanpur in Satkhira town, said Rashed looted valuables and took away 13 cows from his Magura house between Sept 13 and 15 when his son Milan Paul was in jail as a suspect in a smuggling case.
Locals beat up Rashed when he was trying to drive Milan's car away, said Debdash, adding that the car was later smashed in revenge.
Refuting the allegations, Refat Amin said she had been doing business in partnership with Milan Pual and that valuables had been taken away from Milan's house informing the OC of Satkhira sadar police.
The OC, however, said he knew nothing about the matter.
On April 15 last year, Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of acting Mohila Awami League general secretary Pinu Khan, allegedly fired random shots in the air from his jeep with “frustration over post-midnight traffic” on New Eskaton Road, leaving a rickshaw-puller and an auto-rickshaw driver dead.
