4,000 illegal SIMs seized
Police yesterday recovered around 4,000 SIMs, registered with false data, from a market in the port city's Kotwali area.
They also detained eight people.
On information that illegal SIMs were being sold at some shops of Royal Plaza Market in Reazuddin Bazar, a Detective Branch team of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) raided the market around 4:00pm.
Maruf Hossain, deputy commissioner of DB (port zone), said they had information that SIMs were being sold without proper procedures.
“The total number of SIMs that we have seized would be around four thousand,” he told The Daily Star.
The SIMs are of all the mobile operators, he said.
“We are investigating whether the detainees are involved in the crime,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner Anwar Hossain of CMP Detective Branch.
He said they were looking into the matter and would be able to provide more information on this after investigation.
