5 took part in Ananta killing
Five people, including two students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), hacked Ananta Bijoy Das to death for “his write-ups”, claimed CID, quoting one of the “attackers”.
Suspect Mannan Rahi gave his confessional statement before Judge Anwarul Karim of the Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate's Court-3 yesterday, reports our Moulvibazar correspondent.
Mannan, a student of English department at SUST, was arrested at Kanaighat in Sylhet on August 28.
Mirza Abdullahel Baqui, special superintendent of the Criminal Investigation Department, said, “Mannan confessed that he, another SUST student Abul Khair and three others stabbed Ananta to death for his write-ups on Islam.”
Based on information divulged by Mannan, the CID, which is investigating the case, arrested Khair, an honours final-year student at the university, in Sylhet yesterday, Baqui added.
The five killers themselves hatched the plan to kill Ananta the night before the brutal murder. They had reportedly become furious going through the writings of the blogger, the CID official said based on Mannan's statement.
The next morning, the assailants went near Ananta's house, followed him for sometime after he came out; and swooped on him with sharp weapons near Subid Bazar area.
Replying to a query, Baqui said the three other attackers were on the run. He did not disclose their identities for the sake of investigation.
Asked whether the “killers” had any link with banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), which had claimed the responsibility for the murder of Ananta, the CID official said, “We're yet to identify those who made the claim.”
On May 12, Ananta was hacked to death in broad daylight by some masked assailants.
KHAIR ON REMAND
A Sylhet court yesterday placed Abul Khair on a seven-day CID remand after Arman Ali, investigation officer of the case, produced him before the court with a 15-day remand plea.
Meanwhile, CID official Baqui claimed that Mannan Rahi, who was arrested along with his sibling Mohaymen Noman, a student at MC College in Sylhet, confessed killing Ananta on the fifth day of his seven-day remand.
Mannan is a former student at Jhingabari Madrasa in Kanaighat, he added.
Earlier, Idris Ali, a photojournalist of local daily Sobuj Sylhet, was also arrested for his alleged involvement in the killing.
OYASIQUR CHARGE SHEET SUBMITTED
Detectives yesterday pressed charges against five alleged members of Ansarullah Bangla Team in blogger Oyasiqur Rahman Babu murder case.
The five are Zikrullah Hasan, Ariful Islam Mushfiq, Saiful Islam alias Mansur, Akram Hossain Hasib Abdullah and Junayed Taher.
Detective Branch (DB) of police Inspector Moshiur Rahman, also the case's investigation officer, submitted the charge sheet to the general recording branch of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka.
“We'll place the charge sheet to the magistrate tomorrow [today] for its acceptance,” said Altaf Hossain, general recording officer of the court.
Earlier, Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of DB, claimed that Hasib was the mastermind behind the murder.
Hasib, who is known as “Boro Bhai” (big brother) among ABT members, and Taher are now on the run, he added. The other three charge-sheeted accused are in jail.
Cleaver-wielding Zikurullah and Ariful, who are madrasa students, were chased down by locals while they were fleeing after hacking Oyasiqur to death at Begunbari in the capital's Tejgaon Industrial Area on March 30.
