A gang of armed men shot dead three activists of the Awami League and injured a few others in Pabna Sadar upazila last night.
The victims were identified as Abdus Salam, 35, Fazlur Rahman, 32, and Sultan Mahmud, 30.
They all hailed from Dharmagram village and were members of the ruling party, Russell Ali Masud, organising secretary of Pabna Sadar AL, told The Daily Star.
Local AL leaders have blamed the BNP-Jamaat for the attack.
A ward-level AL meeting was in progress at Pushpapara Bazar of Atailkula when the attack was made. The armed men opened fire on the meeting, killing the three on the spot and wounding some others, Masud said.
He also said many of those who were in the meeting remained missing since the attack.
“There is a longstanding feud between the Awami League and the BNP-Jamaat in Pushpapara. The BNP-Jamaat men gunned them down in a planned way,” Masud said.
Additional Superintendent of Pabna Police Mostain Hossain said they did not have the detailed information of the attack or of the casualties as no eyewitnesses were available.
Panic-stricken people fled the bazar following the attack. All the shops were reportedly shut down immediately.
No information on the number of attackers or the fate of those missing could be obtained as this correspondent could not reach anyone of the area despite several attempts till 10:30pm last night.
