Formalin-testing units at 236 city kitchen markets soon
Dhaka Metropolitan Police will set up formalin-testing booths at 236 kitchen markets in the capital in a week to determine presence of the harmful chemical in food items.
‘We will set up the booths within seven to 10 days so that customers and retailers can test their food items at nominal costs,” DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed said.
He was addressing a discussion at National Press Club in the capital this afternoon.
Police will provide the services but university-level students will also be engaged in testing the food items, the DMP commissioner said.
“Government support and unified authorities are needed to make the anti-formalin campaign a success,” the DMP boss said.
Around 600 tonnes of formalin is being imported into the country every year whereas the demand is only 50 tonnes, he said.
“We have already identified at least 38 institutes who import formalin. We will keep vigil on their movement,” he warned.
Saarc Cultural Society organised the discussion on food safety with its president Syed Abu Hossain Babla in the chair.
Later, the DMP commissioner distributed clothes among destitute ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr.
State Minister for Labour and Employment M Mujibul Haque Chunnu, among others, spoke at the occasion.
