'Forest robber' hurt in 'gunfight' with police
An alleged forest robber was injured in a 'gunfight' between his cohorts and police in the Boro Tiakhali River in Shyamganj upazila in Sundarbans on Friday night.
The robber was identified as Kamrul Islam, second-in-command of infamous robber gang 'Alim Bahini'.
Aminul Islam, officer in-charge of Shyamnagar Police Station, said a team of police arrested Kamrul Islam from Mirganj area in Kaliganj upazila on Friday morning.
Following confessional statement of Kamrul, police raided a spot in Boro Tiakhali River area in Sundarbans under Satkhira range around 11.00pm.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, accomplices of Kamrul opened fire towards police, forcing them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.
Police exchanged 30 rounds of bullet during the gunfight.
Kamrul and three policemen were injured in the incident.
Police recovered a pipe gun and four bullets from the scene.
Kamrul was wanted by police in several cases filed with Koyra, Kaliganj and Shyamnagar police stations.
Away in Feni, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested a 'robber' along with arms and ammunition from a house in Sonagazi upazila of the district yesterday morning, reports a correspondent.
The arrestee was identified as Md Amir Hossain Khokan alias Killer Khokan, 30, son of Md Hafiz Ullah of Uttar Char Chandia village under the upazila.
