Five of 50 abducted fishermen freed
Five of the 50 fishermen, who were abducted by the forest robbers from different areas of the Sundarbans on Thursday, were freed on Friday.
Lieutenant Commander M Alauddin, staff officer of the Coastguard Bangladesh Mongla (West) Zone, said they found the five fishermen in an abandoned boat in Morapashu River on the evening and rescued them.
The rest of the fishermen, however, could not be rescued as of yesterday.
Earlier on Thursday, forest robbers kidnapped 50 fishermen from different areas of the Sundarbans for ransom. Most of the fishermen hail from different villages in Mongla, Rampal and Sharankhola upazilas of Bagerhat district.
Some fishermen, who escaped attack, said “Awal alias Sotta Bahini” swooped on over 200 fishing trawlers in Harbaria, Dhansiddhirchar, Nandabala and Morapashu areas under Chandpai Range of the Sundarbans on Thursday evening and picked up 50 fishermen.
