First SSC exam passes off peacefully
The first exam of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) was held today peacefully amidst a countrywide indefinite blockade by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
The tests began at 9:00am throughout the country. Over 14 lakh candidates appeared in the exam amidst tight security and deep concerns.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid visited an examination centre at Azimpur Girls School and College around 9:00am.
"The examinations are underway peacefully and no untoward incidents were reported," Nahid told reporters.
The guardians expressed their anxiety as they reached their destination safely. They urged the BNP-led alliance to call off their blockade and refrain from enforcing hartals during the SSC examinations.
"My son has been greatly hampered at the hartal. He suffered mental problems in the ongoing violence," said Md Abu Hasnat, a bank employee and father of an SSC candidate.
Meanwhile, the government deployed 326 platoons of BGB (about 10,000) members across the country to ensure security of the examinees, sources said.
