Families urge PM to return 180 stranded workers from Iraq
Families of the Bangladeshi workers stranded in Iraq for the last seven months today urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to bring back their dear ones before December 16.
The 180 migrant workers have been suffering miserably in the Najaf city of Iraq without food, water and other amenities including power, the families alleged.
The call was made in a press conference at the Jatiaya Press Club in Dhaka organised by several rights-based organisations including Rights Jessore.
Family members and relatives of 50 jobless workers placed their demand to the prime minister. They broke into tears when describing the sufferings of their dear ones in Iraq.
They demanded back their beloved ones back before December 16, Bangladesh’s victory day.
Noted jurist Dr Shahdeen Malik expressed his solidarity with the families and requested the prime minister to take initiative to return the stranded Bangladeshis in Iraq.
Career Overseas Consultants Ltd, a recruitment company, sent the 180 Bangladeshis to Iraq in May with promises of jobs at Abu Torab Housing Project run by a Turkish employer.
But, as the families alleged, they were passing miserable days at a camp in Najaf.
The stranded workers repeatedly requested their employers and Bangladeshi agencies to either provide jobs or send them home, but the pleas fell on deaf ears.
