Extortionists hurl bomb at shop in Jhenidah
Traders of Garaganj Bazar under Sailkupa upazila of the district blocked Jhenidah-Kushtia highway for two hours from 9:00am yesterday, protesting bomb attack on a shop at the bazaar by a gang of extortionists on Friday night.
Several hundred vehicles got stuck on both sides of the road at the bazaar point due to the blockade. The traders withdrew the barricade at around 11:00am after Sailkupa Upazila Nirbahi officer (UNO) Mohammad Ali Prince had assured them of taking necessary measures against the culprits.
Traders alleged that a gang of criminals had been demanding Tk one lakh from Abdul Kuddus, a shop owner of Garaganj Bazar, over mobile phone for the last few days.
As Kuddus refused pay heed to the demand, the gang hurled a bomb at his shop at midnight on Friday.
Protesting the attack, traders came to the street in the morning, took out a procession and then blocked the highway at Garaganj Bazar point. They demanded immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the bomb attack.
UNO Mohammad Ali Prince went to the spot at around 10:00am and assured the traders of taking all necessary steps to arrest the extortionins.
A case was filed with Sailkupa Police Station yesterday morning in connection with the bomb attack. None was arrested as of 5:00pm yesterday.
