The authorities today demolished at least 18 shops and a plant nursery which were built illegally at poet Rabindranath Tagore’s historic Kuthibari in Kushtia this morning.

The drive led by Manjurur Rahman, joint secretary of ministry of cultural affairs, began around 10:00am to knock down the illegal structures inside 3 acres of land of Kuthibari at Shilaidaha in Kumarkhali upazila, reports our Kushtia correspondent.

Mafijuddin Ahmed, superintendent of police in Kushtia, told our correspondent that the move came after the High Court ordered removal of all illegal structures.

The illegal structures were built 15 to 20 years ago, the police officer said.
