EU delegation meets Khaleda
A European Union (EU) parliamentary delegation met BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan office this evening.
Different issues including the January 5 post-polls situation, BNP-led 19-party combine's demand for a fresh election soon, the alliance's anti-government movement and the country’s human rights situation were discussed in the meeting, party leaders present at the talks told The Daily Star.
The meeting started around 6:30pm and continued for an hour, Sayrul Kabir Khan, a staff of BNP chairperson’s media wing, told The Daily Star.
BNP Vice-Chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury, Khaleda’s advisers Sabihuddin Ahmed and Reaz Rahman are assisting her at the meeting.
The four-member EU delegation arrived here yesterday to assess the post-January 5 general election scenario, human rights situation and progress of workers safety in readymade garment industry.
Jean Lambert, chair of the European Parliament delegation to South Asia, is leading the team during its two-day visit which ends tomorrow.
The delegation will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, civil society representatives and trade union leaders.
This mission comes ahead of the first anniversary of the catastrophic Rana Plaza building collapse, which cost over a thousand lives of garment workers, according to a press release of EU embassy in Dhaka yesterday.
