World Premiere of “The Amazing Spiderman 2” held

A landmark for international films in Bangladesh

Staff Correspondent

A long-overdue dream of film lovers of Bangladesh came true yesterday, with the premiere of “The Amazing Spiderman 2” was held at the Star Cineplex on the same day as its global release, along with release on the same day, tomorrow (May 2). An air of festivity surrounded the Star Zone, Cineplex's flagship hall, as an enthusiastic audience was greeted in at the premiere on April 29.
Speaking there, Mahbub Rahman, chairman of Star Cineplex termed the event 'historic', looking back on the country's first multiplex's journey 10 years ago, coincidentally through “Spiderman 2”. He said it was important to convince international distributors that Bangladesh is a sincere and formidable enough market for an international premiere, adding that they have been working on this since January to ensure that the release is in sync with the international dates.
Mahbubul Alam, head of mass market and loyalty & partnership, (marketing) of Banglalink -- a partner of the release, thanked Star Cineplex for their efforts and the ardent film enthusiasts of the city for coming to the cinemas.
Much like international premieres, for the first time a pre-show was also held, with band 42 AD performing a 'Spiderman theme song' they especially wrote and composed for the occasion, followed by a brief skit of an Spiderman coming and saving a pedestrian from a hijacker. The acrobatic superhero then came and shook hands with the audience too, much to the cheers and applause.
The film, directed by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx and Dane DeHaan is on the revamped storyline of the web-slinging superhero, continuing from “The Amazing Spiderman” (2012), and sees Peter Parker's alter-ego coming face to face with the super-villain Electro, while finding out the story behind his father's disappearance, and dealing with complications with his girlfriend Gwen Stacy. His friend Harry Osbourne also returns following his own father's death -- and his transition to Green Goblin is also shown. Like any super-hero movie, the special effects are spectacular, and the story moves along at a nice pace. And much like the film's theme that heroes give people hope, Star Cineplex has given great hope to film buffs of Dhaka, of bringing them the latest blockbusters in line with the global audience.
